It's time to discuss a very interesting topic—sugar. The extraction of sugar cane juice from the sugarcane plant has originated in Southeast Asia around 8,000 B.C. Greeks and Romans used sugar as a medicine and by 1750 sugar surpassed grain as 'the most valuable commodity' in Europe.

Nowadays there are many myths about sugar. The main one is that artificial sweeteners are actually better for you than regular sugar. But is that so?

As a chef with my own brand dedicated to healthy lifestyle I am concerned with huge misunderstanding about the basics of sugar.

Two questions that I am being asked constantly are: 'Does a piece of cake make me fat' and 'Do I need to switch to artificial sweetener to lose weight'? My answer to both questions is No.
All sugar is made naturally by first extracting sugar juice from sugar beet or sugar cane plants, and from there, many types of sugar can be produced.
Sugars are naturally occurring carbohydrates that provide energy for the body in the form of glucose and fructose. Your brain for example, requires roughly 130 grams of glucose on a daily basis to cover the most basic energy needs.
Quality pastry products containing natural sugar in strict proportions consumed in moderation will not make any harm.

Artificial Sweeteners — a Solution?
According to the latest research by Harvard Medical School and Yale University School of Medicine, artificial sweeteners did pose negative effects.

Artificial sweeteners are developed artificially to mimic the sweetness. They are not packed with calories; however, they are made using synthetic substances. The studies have confirmed the links of artificial sweeteners to diseases like kidney disease, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
Natural table sugar is safer than Artificial sweeteners.
Sugar should be consumed in moderation.
Enjoy natural pastries made by chefs with natural products. Natural pastries contain less sugar than popular soft drinks, or factory-produced sweets.
Sugar does not cause obesity. Over consumption of sugar may contribute to obesity but sugar is not the cause. High intakes of sugar are bad for you, no doubt. Every component in our diet, should be consumed in moderation.
